A VERY SUSPECTPODCAST

A Podcast With Two Guys From Suspect (& Guests) Who Have A Lot Of Opinions About Everything.

A Very Suspect Podcast is the official podcast of Suspect Video.

Hosted by Luis the Suspect Guy and Glenn the pop culture encyclopedia.

Luis has been involved in Toronto fandom from his first job at 13 at Toronto's famous SILVER SNAIL comic shop and was the co-founder of SUSPECT VIDEO and owner of Suspect from 1991 - present.

He is also co-founder and co-owner of the Toronto horror convention HORROR-RAMA.

Glenn was the longtime video jockey at SUSPECT VIDEO at Markham Street, author and creator of many zines and was the guitarist of defunct Toronto punk band M.S.I.

AVSP's focus will be pretty well anything we're interested in, be it movies, music, art, comics, t.v... anything.

What you hear is what we recorded with NO EDITS, just a conversation between two guys with opinions and observations.  We want you to experience a natural, non-edited and cleaned-up - mistakes and all idea of what it would be like to eavesdrop on us when we had these yak fests at the store.

It will be uploaded every two weeks.

If you are curious as to what we think of a particular topic or send us feedback email us at suspectvideo@gmail.com

EPISODE 12

Part 1-

MONSTER

MUSIC

EPISODE 12 Part 1 - Monster Music
00:00 / 00:00

Monsters and music - two great things that go great together!

Sure the supernatural and the devilish has always had a corner of music since music began.  Classical music and opera toyed with deals with the devil, murder and madness. Folk songs reflected dark fables, mystical creatures and witches. Early blues and bluegrass sang about the worst of humanity and Faustian deals.

But it's really Heavy Metal and Rock that some musicians REALLY embraced all things dark and monstrous, to the delight of millions.  And when these folks caught on of course monster rock bands would be fictionalized and represented in movies too.

Join Glenn and Luis as they chat about the musicians that embrace and project the macabre.  From devious do-wop, Bobby 'Boris' Pickett, T.V. horror hosts, Alice Cooper, ISS, The Misfits and The Cramps to the amazing fake bands of Phantom of the Paradise - jeez, Glenn even manages to squeeze in his old band M.S.I - we gab about them all!

Cool audio clips abound !!

EPISODE 11-

THE MAGIC

OF POWER

RECORDS

Episode 11 - The Magic of POWER RECORDS
00:00 / 00:00

Come take a trip with us waaay waay back to a time before superhero and comics based t.v. and movies were everywhere.   A kid's comics fix was relegated to a couple of 60's cartoons, the occasional Saturday morning show and.. well... actual comic books.

Then along came POWER RECORDS to deliver a bridge between the printed and the live action experience.  Heroes had a voice via actors, sound effects and music you could listen to as you looked at the comic issue depicted.

Sure it was just a cooler version of those school film strips with the bell to tell you to move the projected image forward but hey.. beggars can't be choosers!

In this one we quickly go over a history of POWER RECORDS, we talk about our impressions and the experience of stories told audibly while looking at the panels.

Gab a bunch about select favorite issues ( surprise.. it's the monster ones), the artists involved, where you went to seek out these artifacts (wasn't no comic stores back then) and we even go on a bit of a tangent.

Cool audio clips abound !!

EPISODE TEN C-

PLANET OF

THE APES

PART THREE

Episode 10 3/3 - T.V. (x 2), Comics, Merch and Beyond
00:00 / 00:00

We conclude our look back at POTA by talking about everything after the original film series.

Just 'cause the powers that be stopped the original film series after the fifth installment didn't mean apes fans couldn't continue getting their fix via other means: a live action t.v. series, an animated series, comics, magazines, toys and more... then came Burton... then a new series !

Of course we (again) can't stop going into tangents that have NOTHING to do with the topic but.. hey.. that's us!

PLANET OF

THE APES

PART TWO

Episode 10 2/3 - - The Escape, the Battle and the Conquest
00:00 / 00:00

We continue our look back at POTA by talking about the last three films of the original run.

The series got smaller and smaller budgets but still delivered quality ape entertainment and LOTS of cool political/religious subtext.

Hear about Apes kickin' human ass!  What gorillas REALLY think of chimps!

Hear about the rise of our simian masters with those two Suspect Guys!

Yes, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Battle For the Planet of the Apes and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.

EPISODE TEN A-

PLANET OF

THE APES

PART ONE

Episode 10 1/3- - The Book, the Planet and Beneath
00:00 / 00:00

The only good human.. is a dead human !!!

We delve into the series that will not die!

It began with a french science fiction book by the author of BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER KWAI which was (kind of loosely) adapted into a major motion picture that resulted in countless cultural memes.

There was no plans of any kind of sequel but money (plus ideas) talk and here we are, decades later and the Apes continue their cultural march across all media.

In this first of a projected 4 episode series Luis and Glenn tackle the book and the first two entries.

EPISODE NINE A-

TRUCKER &

C.B. CULTURE

GOOD BUDDY

Episode 9 1/2 - Trucker & C.B.s Part 1 Good Buddy!
00:00 / 00:00

Hey there good neighbour !

Got yer ears on ? Here's a little radio check.

You all ready to read the mail?  Cause those ratchet jaws, L & G,are gonna talk smokey, mama bears and lot lizards.  Heck, they're even gonna jaw on 10-4 good buddies.

So pay your water bill, sit a spell and get ready to read the mail.

What the hell did I just say?  That there is C.B.Trucker lingo and the boys are tackling a subculture that came to prominence in the seventies and into the eighties with the popularity of the first mode of personal broadcast:  The C.B.Radio and with it the heroes that were the men (and some women) that piloted those white line tankers: the eighteen wheel trucks.

Music, movies and more emerged to glorify these asphalt heroes and Luis and Glenn discus a bunch of them in this first part of a two part podcast.

They didn't mean for this to be a two part episode but things got away from them.

Plus cool audio clips too!

SUSPECT

CULTURE

MAGAZINE

Episode 8 - Suspect Culture Magazine
00:00 / 00:00

Did you know that your pals at Suspect Video were planning on producing an honest-to-goodness MAGAZINE?

It was going to be an awesome, counter culture rag that covered movies, music, comics and more.. PLUS.. we were going to do mail order for tons of cool zines n'stuff!

We published a SINGLE ISSUE.

A massive 80 page tome with a mini 26 page zine Velcro-ed  inside!

Why did we do it?  What happened to it?  Why didn't we do more?

Luis & Glenn gab about the writing of it, what the movie scene was like back then and of course wild tangents other stuff.

EPISODE SEVEN-

ROB

ZOMBIE's

MOVIES

Episode 7 - Rob Zombie
00:00 / 00:00

Rob Zombie.

One of the most polarizing filmmakers working in horror.

From his first feature 'House of 1000 Corpses' to his re-imagining of 'Halloween' to his most recent film '31', the man's work certainly has it's fans but, let's face it, his detractors are legion.

Why is that?  How could the work of such an unabashed horror kid (who happens to be a rock star) be so derided by the community he so belongs to?

We'll talk about each of Zombie's features (hey, it's only six!) and we've got audio clips of them too!!

And of course wild tangents other stuff.

EPISODE SIX-

MADE

FOR T,V,

MOVIES

Episode 6- - Made For T.V. Movies
00:00 / 00:00

Starting in the 1960s the big three U.S. television stations went into feature film production as a means of self generating films and creating exciting televised 'events'.

Thus was born the Movie of the Week !!

Sure they were burdened with low budgets and constrained with prime time censorship but they circumvented these restrictions with wit, suggestion and slight of hand.

This resulted in some glorious genre classics - Horror. Thrillers. Exploitation. Fantasy.

Some films launched careers, some launched television series, some have been all but forgotten.

Join Luis and Glenn as they yak about the history, the movies and the memories of 'The Movie Of The Week'!

And of course wild tangents other stuff.

EPISODE FIVE-

MARVEL'S

HORROR

HEROES

Episode 5- - Marvel's Horror Heroes
00:00 / 00:00

The 1970's was a time of change: music, movies and especially comics.

The loosening of the strict Comics Code Authority's banning of zombies, werewolves, vampires and pretty much anything ghoulish and macabre opened up a sliver of hope for all us monster kids and Marvel took full advantage by not only introducing classic monsters of literature but a whole bunch of denizens of the dark - all with a Marvel spin.

Topics include:

How the monsters came about.

The writers and artists that breathed life to horror heroes.

The ones that lasted and the ones that didn't quite find an audience.

And of course wild tangents other stuff.

EPISODE FOUR-

SATURDAY

MORNING

WAS FOR KIDS

Episode 4- - Saturday Morning in the 70's
00:00 / 00:00

Sugary cereal WTH TOYS ! Sleestacks ! Hanna-Barbera! School House Rock ! Scooby Doo! Herculoids! Eating in front of the T.V. !

Luis and Glenn, being oldsters, reminisce about the magic that was Saturday mornings for kids in the 70's.

Yes, before everything was immediately accessible at any time, you had to wait till Saturday morning to literally gorge your face and brains with sugary food and cool shows.  from the live action craziness of Land Of The Lost, Jason of Star Command and the Hudson Brothers Show to animated classics (and not so classics) as Hong Kong Phooey, Super Friends and Space Ghost, the guys remember them all!

And of course other stuff.

HIGHS

& LOWS

Episode 3 - - Where Luis & Glenn talk about KISS
00:00 / 00:00

Luis and Glenn start off by trying to narrow down what they're going to talk about (because they are so professional) then tackle the biggest band in the land.. KISS!

Yeah, like so many of our generation KISS was almost the gateway band for nerdy geeks like them. They talk about how they discovered them, the Marvel comic, the made-for-t.v. KISS MEETS THE PHANTOM, the albums, the merch and more!

And it ain`t all positive !

Topics include:

Discovering KISS.

KISS' pinnacle.

KISS' decline.

And of course other stuff.
