He was, in fact, a disgraced bishop, a bloodthirsty man who led a gang of thieves and killers. They lived in the Middle Ages, terrorizing children and families who had the misfortune of crossing their path. Finally, the villagers decided to rid themselves of the fearsome gang by setting fire to their boat. Just before dying, St. Nicholas swore his killing would not go unpunished.
